Counselor II - Family Intervention Specialist

Position Description:

Employees in this position perform duties related to the assessment and case management of program clients. Employees in this position are aware of available community resources, they make appropriate referrals to same, and they function as a member of the Department of Children and Family Services, Family Safety Services Team.

Position Expectation:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Screens clients and family members referred by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) via a standardized substance abuse screening tool, participates in service plan development, and provides referrals/linkages to substance abuse treatment resources.
  • Coordinates linkages and follow-up activities including the identification of barriers and facilitation of barrier removal.
  • Participates in ESI staffings and quarterly staffings for the purpose of monitoring client progress.
  • Performs case management functions concurrent with the client Family Safety Supervision Plan including maintaining case records, coordinating additional services as needed, maintaining a directory of treatment resources, monthly notification to Family Safety Worker regarding progress of client, performing drug screens as needed, and home visits and other contacts with clients outside their local office.
  • Monitors client progress with regard to completing substance abuse intervention/treatment plan objectives and provides monthly reports to DCFS Family Safety staff regarding same.
  • Manages a discretionary fund which supports substance abuse treatment completion. Maintains records and audit trail of expended funds and obtains approval of supervisor and the Department of Children and Family Services prior to expending funds.
  • Performs other reasonable and related duties as requested by the immediate supervisor or administrative personnel.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Requires Bachelor’s Degree in field related to Human Services from an accredited college or university, which include but not limited to: Social Work; Clinical Psychology; Counseling; Rehabilitative Counseling; Counseling Education; Education; Criminal Justice; or Ministry and at least two (2) years full-time experience in mental health or addictions treatment setting or certification as an Addictions Professional (CAP) by the Certification Board for Addiction Professionals of Florida.
  • Requires participation in a staff-training program.
  • Requires considerable knowledge of addictions and/or mental health treatment including types of programs, various therapeutic methods and techniques, and an understanding of the factors contributing to the development of substance abuse and/or mental health problems.
