Counselor I

Department: Prevention
Location: Sebring, FL

Position Description
Employees in this position perform a wide variety of duties related to the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of program clients. These employees are aware of available community resources and are able to make appropriate referrals. They function as a member of a treatment team.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides case management services including acting as a liaison between Tri-County and referral sources/community service organizations.
  • Interviews clients and collects information necessary to complete the intake process.
  • With appropriate supervision, records individual case information, updates case files, and provides case status information in order to provide a complete record of services.
  • Confers with supervisor and other team members at staff meetings, providing and/or receiving information as necessary to determine an appropriate treatment plan.
  • With appropriate supervision, teaches alcohol/drug education classes and provides other educational services.
  • Participates as a co-facilitator during group counseling sessions, with direct supervision by a Counselor II, Counselor III, or Clinical Supervisor/Program Supervisor.
  • Required to meet and maintain TCHS Approved Driver Qualifications per policy number 100.007.52 and transport TCHS person served in any agency vehicle.
  • Performs other reasonable and related duties as requested

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED and at least two (2) years of full-time experience in a mental health or addictions treatment setting. A Bachelor's Degree in Human Services may be substituted for the two (2) years of experience.
  • Requires participation in a staff training program.
  • Requires a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Requires knowledge of addictions and/or mental health treatment programs and supportive services.
  • Requires general understanding of the causes, nature, and treatment of substance abuse and/or mental health problems.
